The Venice of the North

The Vince of the North is located at the east coast of Sweden. It is widely known for its natural beauty. It is the largest municipality in the country of Sweden. It is located at the mouth of the Lake Malaren. It is one of the biggest cities in the Nordic countries apart from Copenhagen.

Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden, is also called the Venice of the North. In history it was an important site for the iron trade. The first part of the name stock means log and the second holm means islet. It is said that a stick pushed into the waters finally gets drifted to the holm or Stockholm. So it was a harbour for returning ships in the past. In the modern times many of its historical buildings were torn down and modern architecture was built. Now the city has only high-tech and service type of industries. It is also the financial center of Sweden. The hotels in Stockholm make it comfortable to visit this city.

As this city is located very north of the latitude we can observe the phenomenon of midnight sun. The day is elongated to eighteen hours in June and contracted to six hours in December. The Climate is extremely varied. It experiences cold winters and mild summers. In the recent years tourism has been increasing in the city. An accommodation in Stockholm is very much needed for a pleasant tour of this city.

The Royal Institute of Technology is located here which was founded in 1827 and is by large in Scandinavia with 13,000 students. There is also a museum of natural history and a botanical garden in the city. There are two UNESCO World Heritage sites - the Royal Palace Drottningholm and the Forest Cemetery Skogskyrkogården. It was selected as the European city of culture in 1998. Riddarholmskyrkan is the oldest building dating backt to 13th century. The city hosted the 1912 Summer Olympics. There are many theaters which are most notable in the Europe. The cheap hotels in Stockholm are available to make the tour at Stockholm comfortable and enjoyable.
